As a substitute teacher you have control of your schedule - you can pick the days, times (half or full day), school and subject area of the job you choose to work! The daily rate of pay for substitute teachers is based on an individuals level of certification and past teaching experience, as noted below.

Daily Pay Rates:
  • Wyoming Substitute License:  $151/day 
  • Wyoming Teaching License: $158/day 
  • Retired Teacher (Non-SCSD2): $161/day 
  • Retired Teacher (SCSD2): $168/day
Work Day Incentives:
  • 0-10 days worked/month = Daily rate of pay
  • 11-14 days worked/month = $75/month
  • 15-19 days worked/month = $100/month
  • 20+ days worked/month = $125/month
 
To substitute teach in Wyoming, you must carry a Professional Teaching Standards Board (PTSB) certificate. This permit is valid for five years and is eligible for renewal. 
 
There are two ways to meet the requirements for a substitute teacher permit. To receive a permit, follow one of the paths listed below. Additional details can also be found at wyomingptsb.com.
 
College Credit Path
  • Complete at least 60 semester hours or an associate's degree from an accredited college/university
  • Successfully complete the US and Wyoming Constitution exams. If you have taken one or both of these at the college level and can provide transcripts for these courses, you have satisfied this requirement. If you have not taken these college-level courses, you will need to contact our office at (307)674-7405 to arrange for the tests to be administered. There is no fee to take these tests in our office. 
  • Submit a complete application packet for a Wyoming Education Permit and required documentation, including fingerprints. Our office can provide you with completed fingerprints to send in with your application, and we are happy to assist with your application process. Please contact us to make an appointment.

Alternative Path 1 (currently not facilitated by our district)
  • Hold a high school diploma or GED
  • Complete 24 hours of in-service training and 30 hours of classroom observation (10 hours at each level: elementary, middle, and high school)
  • Successfully complete the US and Wyoming Constitution exams. If you have taken one or both of these at the college level and can provide transcripts for these courses, you have satisfied this requirement. If you have not taken these college-level courses, you will need to contact our office at (307)674-7405 to arrange for the tests to be administered. There is no fee to take these tests in our office.
  • Submit a complete application packet for a Wyoming Education Permit and required documentation, including fingerprints. Alternative Path 2 (Onsite training offered by NWCCD/Johnson County Campus)
 
Complete the Effective Substitute Teaching class (EDCI 1005). This course is offered through Sheridan College at the Johnson County Campus in Buffalo, Wyoming. The requirements for the course, syllabi, and sample schedule are listed below. This is a two-week course offered every fall and spring semester. Tuition for this course is $238 and requires an additional $100 fee payable to PTSB for the application and fingerprint fees. By the time you have completed the class, you will have met the requirements for the 24 hours of in-service training and 30 hours of classroom observation.  
 
Syllabus - Effective Substitute Teach Class (EDCI 1005)
 
SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS REPORT TO: Assistant Superintendent
 
JOB GOAL: To instruct students and facilitate their learning in the absence of the regular teacher. Substitute teachers shall create a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth; establish effective rapport with students; motivate students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for education in accordance with each student’s ability and establish good relationships with parents and other staff members.
 
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Reviews substitute plans and schedules to be followed during the teaching day as provided by the absent teacher, principal or assigned mentor. Collaborates with other professionals to implement instruction and related activities. 
  2. Maintains established routines and procedures of the school and the classroom, as assigned. Ensures the classroom and/or instructional environment is healthy, safe, and conducive to learning.
  3. Provides effective classroom/student management, clear instruction, and implement lesson plans, assignments, assessments, and other instructional materials as outlined in the substitute teacher’s plan. May be required to develop lesson plans and assess student achievement in long term assignments.
  4. Assumes responsibility for overseeing student behavior in the assigned classroom, monitors student behavior in non-instructional areas as assigned, and intervenes to control and modify disruptive behavior as appropriate.
  5. Supports a school culture of high academic and behavioral standards that create a supportive and engaging learning environment.
  6. Interacts effectively with students, co-workers, and parents.
  7. Carries out non-instructional duties as assigned and/or as needed.
  8. Performs and promotes all activities in compliance with equal employment and non-discrimination policies; follows federal laws, state laws, school board policies, and professional standards.
