JOB SUMMARY
 
Primarily provides direct and indirect professional nursing care for antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and newborn patients. Additionally may care for gyn and non-OB/GYN patients when not working in the Labor and Delivery setting and in times of peak overflow from other units. Age range served: newborn, adolescent, adult and geriatric. Communicates with physicians/Unit Manager/co-workers, as appropriate about changes in patient’s clinical condition including: results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology. Responds quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Additionally, is able to perform general nursing duties in all departments with adequate supervision. Participates in performance improvement activities.
 
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
 
  • Knowledge of medications and their correct administration/calculation based on the age of the patient and their clinical condition.
  • Follows the five medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
  • Performs patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patient’s age.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patient population served. Able to interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s age specific needs and provide care needed by the patient group.
  • Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassessments as per policy.  This includes all unit age specific populations.
  • Provides care appropriate to disease condition and age of the patient.
  • Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques.  Educates the patient and family regarding pain management.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Ability to formulate and revise an individualized plan of care as indicated by the patient’s response to treatment.  Evaluates overall plan daily for effectiveness.
  • Formulates a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning.  Family is included in teaching as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform treatments and provide services within scope of practice.
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to all health care team members.
  • Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.
  • Demonstrates an ability to assist physicians with procedures and performs services requiring technical and manual skills
  • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function well under stressful situations.
  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity.  Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families.
  • Functions as a liaison between patient/family and physicians, other healthcare providers, and administration.
  • Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formation of the plan of care.
  • Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, nurse Manager, unit staff and other members of the health care team.
  • Documentation meets current standards and policies.
  • Identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of patients and family.  Communicates with social services / discharge planner regarding both in-hospital and post-discharge needs, as appropriate.
  • Coordinates and supervises patient care as necessary.                                              
  • Completes assignments accurately and on time.
  • Demonstrates adherence to infection control policies.  Uses PPE correctly.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of OSHA regulations:  Complies with Blood borne Pathogen, TB exposure plans, and Hazardous Waste Management Program.
  • Willingly performs other duties as assigned or requested.
  • Able to perform all age specific competencies for populations served. (See attached age specific competencies.)
  • Able to perform all unit specific competencies of clinical areas worked. (See attached unit specific competencies.)
  • Maintains competencies in Labor / Delivery and Postpartum / Gyn by: attending unit specific skills labs and working a minimum of: 2 shifts / month in Labor and Delivery and 1 shift / month in Postpartum / Gyn.
  • Actively cross-trained to at least 1 other unit within Women’s and Children’s Services.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Current, unrestricted Wyoming RN License
  • Minimum of 1 year previous RN acute care experience preferred.
  • BLS  certification required.
  • ACLS certification, preferred
  • NRP certification within one year of position start date, required. 
  • PALS certification within one year of position start date, required. 
  • Excellent customer service skills.

Specific demands not listed: Possible exposure to blood and or body fluids / infectious disease / hazardous waste requiring the use of Personal Protective Equipment. Exposure to odorous chemicals / specimens and Latex products.
