SHERIDAN COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE

OPEN POSITION: Detention Deputy

PAY RATE: $51,573.54 annually depending on experience.

BENEFITS: Medical insurance and prescription drug coverage, dental insurance, eye insurance, term life insurance, Wyoming Retirement program, vacation and sick leave, paid holidays.

DESCRIPTION: This position is responsible for the oversight of inmates at the county jail.

 

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Ensures the security of the jail facility by performing internal and external security checks and by conducting cell searches.
  • Conducts head counts; searches for and confiscates unauthorized items; administers discipline and privileges according to jail policy.
  • Performs booking and release of inmates, including receiving, searching, photographing, fingerprinting, and completing bond paperwork
  • Issues clothing, linens, personal items and meals to inmates; dispenses medication as authorized.
  • Supervises inmates engaged in cleaning duties.
  • Transports inmates to medical appointments, court, and other correctional facilities.
  • Coordinates the extradition of prisoners; arranges related transportation; processes related paperwork.
  • Coordinates and participates in the maintenance of Sheriff’s Office buildings and grounds as assigned; coordinates work with external contractors.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

  • Knowledge of criminal detention principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of department booking procedures.
  • Knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws.
  • Knowledge of First Aid and CPR.
  • Knowledge of physical restraint techniques and equipment
  • Skill in interpersonal relations
  • Skill in the supervision of inmates

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Wyoming for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Peace Officer Standards and Training Certification for the State of Wyoming.
