POSITION SUMMARY

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit charitable organization committed to strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under the guidance and supervision of the Childcare Director, the Assistant Teacher is responsible for providing direction for the program and classroom, and implementing program curriculum, along with providing a quality experience to children and parents that focus on the Y values.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

All Childcare Teachers are expected to fulfill the following functions:

 Ability to design, organize and implement age appropriate and developmentally appropriate daily lesson/activity plans

 Ability to solve practical problems and work through situations of varying gravity

 Maintain continuing education credits (STARS) required by state licensing

 Supervise the children, classroom and all activities in a safe environment

 Conduct parent conferences and maintain positive relationships and effective communication with parents

 Maintain required program records

 Attend and participate in family nights, program activities, staff meetings and staff training

 Understand ratios and youth staff, know the number of youth in program at all times

 Communicate effectively the behavior of the child and not the character of the child

 Facilitate transportation safety

 

In addition to the essential duties and responsibilities, Assistant Teachers will:

 Pursue/participate in ongoing training

 Attend all staff meetings and in-services

 Assist in fundraising activities and special volunteer events

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

 Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position; including leading class, walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting.

 Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and switch tasks as new challenges and projects emerge.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 At least 18 years of age.

 Alarm/Emergency Procedures training within 90 days of hire and biannually thereafter.

 CPR, First Aid and Child Abuse Prevention training within 90 days of hire and biannually thereafter.

 New Employee Orientation within 90 days of hire.

 Previous experience working with children in a developmental setting is preferred.
